After you have held a green card (lawful permanent resident status) for five years or more, you usually will qualify to apply for United States citizenship through the naturalization process. If you are married to a U.S. citizen, you might be eligible after only three years. You must also meet other criteria, including a requirement that you have resided continuously in the U.S. for five years – or three years if you are married to a U.S. citizen. You’ll also need to demonstrate good moral character and basic skill in the English language and U.S. history, as well as knowledge of how the U.S. government works.
